AGAINST THE WAR is a historical novel examining the response of the Vietnam War generation to the Vietnam War and the effect of the war on American society. The effect described is a broad phenomenon extending from the theater of war overseas to the growing response to the war at home, as evidenced in the "war on poverty," the anti-war movement, and the counterculture that arises from the anti-war movement.
AGAINST THE WAR follows the intertwined lives of four young men, rowing team-mates who graduate from college in 1968 at the height of the war. Two become involved in the war, one as a combat pilot and one as a medic. The other two of the four friends, in seeking to avoid the war, become involved in the "war on poverty" and anti-war movement.
"Menge's book reminds me of both Theodore Dreiser and John Dos Passos. It's a vast panorama with enormous attention to detail." David Willson, Vietnam War Fiction, Books in Review
Against the War eBook Roland Menge
Against the War really brings you back to the time of the Vietnam War - for those who were around back then. I appreciated having insight into both sides of the issues of the time, and how the friends in the story acted upon their convictions - the conscientious objectors contributed a lot to people in the US who needed it. So many different storylines - romance, people developing communes here in the US, the soldiers in Vietnam and what was happening to them--the friends in the story all went their own ways but kept in touch. The internal struggles of the friends in the story - those who went to war and those who did not - was an interesting aspect. It was a really good book - very thought provoking. -Marv SmithProduct details

Against the War eBook Roland Menge Reviews
I recommend the novel, Against the War by Roland Menge to anyone who experienced the Vietnam era or is interested in learning about the volatile political climate of that time. It is especially enjoyable to revisit this era through the eyes of the eight college friends who drive the story. The author has taken great pains to factually document all events that the men and women characters experience during the late 60's and early 70's. Although the title is "Against the War", it is important to understand that the characters include those who serve in the military as well as those who choose to serve their country and their consciences in alternative ways. The personal stories of the eight friends as they mature and evolve throughout the era is told with remarkable insight and empathy. The author provides an opportunity to reflect on the intriguing time and events that have shaped our culture and attitudes today. The end result is an engaging, well told story that will resonate with those who lived at the time as well as provide insight to those too young to remember those times.
